Mindful Mocktail Choices When Dining Out
One of the reasons I created The Mindful Mixer was because I often found that when I ordered a mocktail at a restaurant, it was usually loaded with soda or some syrupy concoction. Not only were they overly sweet, but who knows what kind of dyes and other mysterious ingredients were hidden in those drinks! That's when I realized: there has to be a better way to enjoy alcohol-free drinks that are both delicious and good for you. So, I came up with some strategies for ordering healthier mocktails when dining out. Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Ask for Alcohol-Free Versions of Cocktails
If you find yourself eyeing a cocktail on the menu, don't be afraid to ask the bartender if they can make it alcohol-free. Some bartenders are more than happy to mix up a non-alcoholic version of your favorite drink. Just be mindful of the ingredients going into it. Ask for fresh ingredients whenever possible, and avoid overly sweet mixers or artificial flavorings.
2. Choose Unsweetened Teas
If you're a fan of iced tea, choose unsweetened tea over the sweetened versions. Restaurants often offer black, green, or herbal teas, and while sweetened teas can taste great, the sugar can add up quickly. If you need a bit of sweetness, try adding a small amount of honey or agave, or ask for a splash of fruit juice.
3. Ask for Fresh Juices
Some mocktails come with cranberry or pomegranate juice, both of which pack a health punch with antioxidants. If the restaurant has cranberry or pomegranate juice, ask for a splash of it with seltzer. You can also ask for a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon to add a zesty twist to the drink. Not only does it taste good, but it’s also a healthy alternative to sugary syrups.
4. Skip the Sodas
When you’re ordering a mocktail, one of the first things to avoid is soda. These drinks are often loaded with sugar and unnecessary additives. Instead, ask for unsweetened seltzer water or sparkling water. Think La Croix, Perrier, or any other sparkling water options they have. I personally love experimenting with different flavored seltzers at home, and it’s a refreshing alternative to sugary drinks when you’re out! Be sure to clarify that you want alcohol free seltzer!
5. Avoid Premixed Drinks
If you're eyeing something on the cocktail menu, like a margarita or a daiquiri, be cautious of premixed drinks. Those bottle mixes may seem convenient, but they typically come with a list of ingredients that’s way too long for comfort. The amount of sugar in those mixes can be shocking! If you do crave a margarita, ask the bartender to mix it fresh using lime juice, agave, and fresh fruit. A little extra effort, but it’s worth it!
With these strategies in mind, ordering a healthy mocktail can be simple and enjoyable, even when dining out. Whether you're at a trendy bar, a casual café, or a fine dining restaurant, there are always ways to make a mindful choice when it comes to your drink.
At The Mindful Mixer, I always strive to use fresh, whole ingredients to create mocktails that are both delicious and nourishing. So the next time you're out, take these tips with you and enjoy a refreshing, healthy drink without any of the unnecessary sugar or additives!
Cheers to sipping smarter and living brighter!
