Mindful Mocktail Choices When Dining Out

Why ordering a mocktail can be frustrating, and how to do it better

If you’ve ever tried ordering a mocktail when dining out… you already know.

It’s usually too sweet, overly simple, or feels like it wasn’t really meant to be ordered in the first place. And after a while, it stops feeling fun… and starts feeling like you’re settling. That’s the moment I realized something:

  • It wasn’t just about the drink.

  • It was about the experience.

And that’s a big part of why I created The Mindful Mixer.

Because you should be able to enjoy what’s in your glass….not just order something to “get by.”

So if you find yourself out at a restaurant and want something that feels a little more intentional, here are a few ways to elevate your mocktail experience.

1. Ask for a Thoughtful Alcohol-Free Version

If a cocktail catches your eye, don’t be afraid to ask if it can be made without alcohol.

But here’s the part most people skip:

Ask how it’s made.

Instead of sugary mixers or heavy syrups, ask for:

  • fresh citrus

  • herbs

  • simple, real ingredients

A good mocktail should still have balance and depth, not just sweetness.

2. Build Something Simple (But Better)

If there aren’t mocktails on the menu, this is where you can get a little creative.

One of my go-to combinations:

Sparkling water + fresh lime + a splash of juice

It sounds simple, but when it’s made with fresh ingredients, it’s clean, refreshing, and actually enjoyable.

You’re not settling, you’re creating something intentional.

3. Choose Ingredients You Feel Good About

A lot of mocktails rely heavily on:

  • syrups

  • sodas

  • artificial flavorings

And while they might taste good in the moment, they often lack balance and intention.

Instead, look for options like:

  • fresh juices

  • herbs

  • citrus

  • natural sweeteners like honey or maple

The goal is awareness.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Customize

This is something most people don’t realize:

You can ask for what you want.

Less sweetness, more citrus, no syrup, extra fresh ingredients, etc.

The more intentional you are with your order, the more enjoyable your drink becomes.

5. It’s Not Just About the Drink

This might be the most important part.

Drinking intentionally isn’t just about what’s in your glass, it’s about how you experience it.

Slowing down. Being present. Actually tasting your drink.

Because most people don’t. And when you do… everything about it changes.

Why This Matters

Mocktails shouldn’t feel like an afterthought.

They should feel just as intentional as anything else in your glass.

You deserve to enjoy the experience too, not just sit on the sidelines of it.

That’s exactly what I focus on at Mindful Mixer workshops…helping people understand ingredients, create their own drinks, and actually experience what they’re drinking.

Final Thought

The next time you’re out, don’t just order something out of habit.

Slow down. Ask a question. Make a small adjustment. Because enjoying your drink isn’t just about what you order…It’s about how present you are when you’re drinking it.

Sip Smarter. Live Brighter.
