Fresh Flavors for Late Spring Mocktails

Every morning, I take a walk behind my house with my dog, Margo. It’s become part of my routine. A quiet, grounding way to start the day before the busyness sets in. Lately, I’ve been paying extra attention to how fast everything is changing. A few weeks ago, the trees were still bare and brown, and now… they’re full. Bright green leaves, blossoms starting to pop, and this glow that only happens in late spring.

I try to use that time on our walk to pause, take a few deep breaths, close my eyes, and really listen to the birds in the distance. I also love watching Margo enjoy her own little adventure. Sometimes I even sit on the ground beside her and just look around. There’s something about seeing the world from her level that reminds me to slow down and be present. That’s really what mindfulness is for me—taking time to notice.

And with Memorial Day weekend around the corner, and grills already being fired up, I wanted to share a few of my favorite mocktail ingredients and recipes that reflect that same kind of seasonal presence—fresh, vibrant, and full of life.

My Late-Spring Go-To Ingredients for Mindful Mocktails:

1. Strawberries

This time of year, strawberries are bursting with flavor. There’s a short window when they’re at their peak here in Central New York, and it’s worth waiting for. I love using them fresh, either muddled into a drink or just as a simple garnish. They add a little natural sweetness without overpowering anything.

Try this: Strawberry Basil Smash — muddle strawberries with basil, add a squeeze of lime, and top with sparkling water. Simple, light, and seasonal.

2. Cucumbers

I’ve been amazed at how refreshing cucumber is in drinks. It adds this clean, cooling flavor that works so well with herbs or citrus. It’s a great way to keep things light without needing extra sweetness.

Try this: Cucumber Mint Cooler — blend cucumber juice with mint and a squeeze of lemon, then top with sparkling water. It’s the kind of drink that keeps you coming back for another sip.

3. Lemon and Lime

Bright, crisp, and a staple in almost every mocktail I make. A little citrus goes a long way in balancing out other ingredients and giving your drink that fresh from the garden feeling.

Try this: Citrus Fizz — lemon and lime juice, a touch of agave or honey, and sparkling water. Easy and uplifting.

4. Mint

Mint reminds me of the cool mornings and fresh air this time of year. It adds a crisp aroma and flavor that can completely transform a drink (especially when it’s freshly picked).

Try this: Virgin Mojito — muddle mint with lime and a bit of agave or honey, then top with sparkling water. A refreshing way to wind down or cool off.

5. Raspberries

They’re bold, a little tart, and always add a pop of color. I love pairing raspberries with lemon or watermelon to keep the flavor balanced and bright.

Try this: Raspberry Lemonade Spritz — blend raspberries with lemon juice and honey, then add sparkling water. Great for a sunny afternoon on the patio.

6. Watermelon

Watermelon just makes sense this time of year. It’s juicy, naturally sweet, and super hydrating…perfect for warm days and easy to blend into a pitcher style drink for a group.

Try this: Watermelon Mint Cooler — blend fresh watermelon with mint and a little lime, then top with sparkling water. Light and satisfying.

Being Mindful of Spring’s Bounty

For me, making mocktails isn’t just about mixing ingredients, it’s about slowing down, using what’s in season, and creating something that feels good in your body. I choose ingredients with intention, because they taste great, but also because they nourish and reflect what’s growing around us.

Whether you’re hosting a BBQ or just sitting outside with friends, I hope one of these mocktails makes its way into your glass.

Take a breath. Soak it in. And enjoy the moment.
